Towing in Sylvania, Ohio

Sylvania runs right up to the Michigan border, with US-23 carrying traffic north toward Ann Arbor and a single exit inside the city at Monroe St. Two things catch people out here: the Exit 234 rebuild that began in 2026, and the fact that the city and the township around it have separate police departments.

Sylvania is about 10 miles west-northwest of downtown Toledo, right up against the Michigan state line. Updated .

Need a tow in Sylvania?

Call and your request goes to an independent provider serving Sylvania and Sylvania Township. On US-23, give your direction and where you are relative to Exit 234 (Monroe St), the only US-23 exit in the city; north of milepost 234.83 you are in Michigan. Off the highway, give a street address or a landmark such as Lourdes University. Check OHGO for the Exit 234 rebuild.

Main roads in and around Sylvania

  • 23

    US-23

Exit 234 (Monroe St/SR-51/US-223) is the only US-23 exit inside the city. The Michigan line is at milepost 234.83, and US-23/US-223 continue toward Ann Arbor.

  • 51

    SR-51 Monroe St

The main road between Sylvania and Toledo; SR-51 ends at US-23 Exit 234.

  • 184

    SR-184 Alexis Rd

Reached from Exit 234 and runs east to I-75 at Exit 210.

    I-475

Exit 14, where I-475 turns east and US-23 continues north, is in Sylvania Township, south of the city.

  • 20

    US-20 Central Ave

Meets I-475/US-23 at Exit 13 (US-20/SR-120), also in Sylvania Township.

  • Sylvania Ave

City police or township police?

Sylvania Township surrounds the city, and the two have separate police departments: Sylvania Police for the city and Sylvania Township Police for the area outside it (Sylvania Area Chamber contact list).

  • Emergency: if anyone is hurt or a car is blocking a lane, call 911.
  • Crash report: the department that investigates is the one that files the report, so note which one came. You can search for the report later by agency on the state’s crash retrieval portal.
  • The tow itself: a provider serving the area can come to either side of the city line. Just give the street and the nearest crossroad.

The Exit 234 rebuild

The Monroe St bridge over US-23 closed for 150 days starting March 8, 2026, to rebuild the Exit 234 interchange (13abc), and the city expected final work in spring 2027. Because Exit 234 is the only US-23 exit inside Sylvania, any ramp or bridge closure there changes how a tow truck reaches you. Check OHGO for the current layout, and if you are following detour signs when the car quits, tell the dispatcher which detour.

Breakdowns near the Michigan line

US-23 leaves Ohio at milepost 234.83, just past Exit 234, and continues north with US-223 toward Ann Arbor. North of the line is Whiteford Township in Monroe County, Michigan.

  • Say which state you are in. A mile marker or the last exit settles it.
  • Know which number to use. #677 reaches the Ohio State Highway Patrol; for an emergency on either side of the line, call 911.
  • Heading north? A tow from Sylvania to a dealer or shop in Michigan is a long-distance tow. Have the full address.

On weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., ODOT’s free Freeway Safety Patrol covers US-23 from I-475 to SR-184 (Alexis Rd). It can change a flat or give a little fuel, but towing is not among its listed services (ODOT).

Towing in Sylvania: common questions

Which police department do I call in Sylvania?

Call 911 if anyone is hurt or a lane is blocked. For a non-emergency report, it depends on the address: Sylvania Police serve the city, and Sylvania Township Police are a separate department for the township around it. The Sylvania Area Chamber lists contacts for both.

Is the Monroe St bridge over US-23 open?

The bridge closed for 150 days starting March 8, 2026 so the Exit 234 interchange could be rebuilt, and the city expected final work in spring 2027. Check OHGO for the current status before you rely on that exit.

Is there a Sylvania Ave exit on US-23?

No. US-23 crosses over Sylvania Ave without an interchange; the only US-23 exit in the city is Exit 234 at Monroe St. If you stop near the Sylvania Ave overpass, say so and give your direction of travel.

Can I get a tow from Sylvania to Michigan?

Yes, that is a long-distance tow. US-23 continues north toward Ann Arbor, so have the full destination address ready and ask for the total price before the car is loaded.
